What is conscious sedation?

Conscious sedation has the objective of allowing patients to enter a state of relaxation while undergoing the necessary treatments. There are two techniques for this sedation: they are conscious inhalation sedation and conscious intravenous sedation.

  •   Conscious inhalation sedation: the procedure is that the patient breathes through a nasal mask a mixture of gases based on nitrous oxide, which is popularly called the «gas of laughter». When inhaling this gas, the patient enters a state of great relaxation and well-being, which allows him to control his feelings of fear and anxiety; At the same time it facilitates the work of dentists. This methodology has effective, fast and totally safe effects.
  • Intravenous conscious sedation: the procedure is by intravenous sedative drugs to control anxiety, these drugs are assimilated by the body very quickly. It is used mostly in longer and complex treatments such as surgeries. This methodology must be supervised by an anesthesiologist, who will be in charge of regulating the dose according to the needs, as well as controlling the patient’s heart rate at all times.

Conscious sedation can be performed in all types of treatments, and is performed in the same dental clinic. It is a solution for patients who have panic or fear of the dentist, there are many cases. And the choice of which type suits more will depend on the treatment to be performed, according to its complexity and duration, and also of each patient in particular
